Trick or treat yo self with these M&M pumpkins for your spooky season decor.
Halloween isn’t all about tricks—it’s about treats, too! If we’re being completely honest with one another, the treats around Halloween time are probably the best part about spooky season! I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite candies to have at Halloween is M&Ms. They’re so colorful and chocolate-y. Who wouldn’t love them?! But my second favorite part of spooky season is decorating pumpkins you pick up from the store or pumpkin patch. So why not combine both loves?
To help get creative for Halloween and make it extra sweet like you are, I have created the perfect Halloween decoration ever: M&M Pumpkins! They are so deliciously adorable, you’ll be craving some M&Ms! Only requiring some paint, small decorative pumpkins (or real ones), and paint brushes (I have a few other items listed below that could also help), these M&M Pumpkins don’t require much to make them! They are so fun to make for people of all ages and everyone will be saying, “I want candy!”
Read on below to learn how to make your own M&M Pumpkins!
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- Small decorative pumpkins (I got these from the Target deals section for $3 each)
- Paint for your pumpkins
- Red paint: Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint in Habañero
- Blue paint: Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint in Indigo
- Yellow paint: Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint in Sunshine Yellow
- Green paint: Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint in Verdant Hills
- White paint: Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint in Wedding Cake
- Black paint: Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint in Black Belt
- Paint brushes
- An “M” logo template (I traced the logo off of my computer screen and cut it out)
- Painter’s tape (optional, but it will help hold the “M” logo while you’re painting)
- A pencil (optional, but it can help you mark things out while painting the face)
Here’s How to Make Your M&M Pumpkins:
To make you M&M Pumpkins, start by painting each of your pumpkins for the characters: one red, one blue, one yellow, and one green. I used the Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint like I usually do. This craft paint is a little more expensive that some of the other craft paints, but the colors come out so vibrant so I think it’s worth the little splurge. However, you are more than welcome to use whatever paint you like.
Start by painting a first coat for each pumpkin and let it dry completely to see if more coats are needed. For my pumpkins, I ended up doing two coats for the red, blue, and green pumpkins and four coats for the yellow pumpkin. You, of course, don’t need to paint your pumpkins as many time as I did; only paint them until your are happy with the coverage. Just make sure to let your pumpkin dry completely between each coat of paint.
After the painting is done and the pumpkins are dry, it’s time to paint on the M&M logo. For my “M,” I traced the logo off of my computer screen using a piece of paper and a pen. I then cut out the “M” to create a template for me to use so all of they were all uniform on the pumpkins. To help keep the “M” in place as I was painting, I used some painter’s tape to secure it. I placed the template towards the bottom of the pumpkin to ensure that I would have enough space to add in the M&M’s faces later.
Once you have the “M” logo secured, dab it in with your white paint until the entire template is painted in. Carefully remove your “M” template and allow for it to completely dry before you move on to your next step.
After letting my pumpkins dry, I went back and painted over the “M” logos with a standard paintbrush and the white paint to make sure it popped against the colorful backgrounds.
When the logos were painted on and dry, I lightly marked out where I wanted to place the eyes with a pencil. It helped to look at pictures of the M&M characters to see what their expressions were like. For example, Yellow’s eyes are a little more slanted so I painted the whites of the eyes a little more at an angle. However, you don’t necessarily follow the characters’ photos; paint the expressions how you’d like. I promise they’ll still come out super cute and will be totally recognizable as the M&Ms. I also painted two coats for the whites of the eyes to make sure they really stood out.
After you have painted on the whites of the eyes, add in the irises with your black paint. For Red and Yellow’s eyes, I made the irises in more of a horseshoe shape, whereas for Blue, I made his irises in a circular shape with the center left out for the pupil. For Miss Green, I put both of her irises more to the side of the eyes to give her than sassy look to match her personality. As I did with the other details, I painted two coats for the irises so they were brighter.
Before moving on to the M&M Pumpkins’ other features, I finished off Miss Green’s eyes by adding some eyeliner and eyelashes with the black paint to the top of her eyes like her character has so she had that more feminine look.
With the eyes all done, I painted their mouths next. I wanted to keep with the characters’ personalities, so I made sure to have the mouths reflect that. For example, Red is a little mischievous so I wanted him to have that cheeky grin. Miss Green has beautiful full lips, so I made sure she had them here, too! To create the slightly darker green shade for her lips, I mixed her green paint with a dollop of black paint so it was just a shade darker.
For each mouth shape, I, again, used a pencil to lightly make some markings so I knew where to paint. I also painted two coats for their mouths to make sure they were more pronounced.
Lastly, finish off their faces with some eyebrows! Again, I tried to keep the eyebrows in line with their personalities, which is why Red’s one eyebrow is a little raised to give him that mischievous look.
And here is the finished product! Aren’t they so cute?! They almost look good enough to eat! Ha!
These M&M Pumpkins will definitely add a sweet touch to your Halloween decor!
