What happens when you fail summer school? ›

In the US, assuming high school age, if you chose to take a summer course and failed it, nothing would happen unless it was a required course, and then you would have to take it during the school year. Again in the US, again high school age but this time you were directed to take the class to make up a credit.

In most cases, it's because the student didn't pass a particular class (or all classes) and needs to catch up. If you don't go, you don't get the credit you need. Or you don't get to pass into the next grade. Or you don't get to graduate.

Slow or Vague Instructor Feedback

Providing efficient yet meaningful feedback is another one of the challenges of online education for teachers, largely due to the lack of non-verbal cues and synchronous communication that occurs in a traditional classroom.

Inherently, summer classes increase the chance for you to raise your grade point average (GPA). GPA is the total score of all your grades divided by the number of classes you've taken. The more classes you take, the less each grade will impact your overall GPA - giving those tougher classes a little less influence.

If you are required to go to summer school, you cannot get out of going unless you changed schools where you can repeat a year.

But in many cases, an online degree is more challenging for students because it requires more self-discipline and motivation to "take an active part in their learning," Mathes says. And, like residential students, online students need to maintain academic integrity when completing assignments and taking exams.

On average, online courses last eight to nine weeks, especially those offered through universities. On the other hand, some schools that specialize in online degree programs have developed online courses that can be completed in a shorter time frame.

The specific number of classes you need to fail to get held back in 7th grade may vary depending on your school district's policies. However, in general, most schools will hold you back if you fail in more than two subjects.

Lack of Student Engagement

The lack of student engagement consistently tops the list of teaching problems, especially with motivation playing a pivotal role in students' online learning experiences.

It is difficult to provide good classroom management as the online teacher, considering that you can't even see all of the students at one time on the classroom webcam. I've taught Spanish 1-4 and was not very impressed with the curriculum. It felt very patched together, with the upper-level classes being way too hard.

Most high schools will include grades from accredited summer courses in the calculation of your GPA. This typically means if you take summer classes offered by your high school or an accredited institution, the grades should be factored in.

According to the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), students who do not participate in educational activities during the summer break can lose two months in math, while low-income students can lose two to three months in reading.

Although it can be a good option, summer school is often considered a punishment to the student for failing to master academic skills. Sometimes teachers or parents threaten students with summer school if they don't receive a certain grade or have trouble turning in assignments.

Getting ahead on coursework or graduating early.

If a student wants to skip a grade, graduate early from high school, or get a head start on college, then taking summer school courses can be a great opportunity for them.
