If each sandwich requires a tablespoon of crushed pecans, why does the recipe call for two cups?

Carol

Placement of the word "crushed" is the key. A tablespoon of crushed pecans means to measure already crushed pecans. "Two cups of pecans, crushed" means to measure then crush. Crushing reduces the volume so recipes usually give a generous measure to allow for different sizes and packing of the nuts in the cup.

Better to butter the slices of bread before layering other ingredients.

Meredith

I won’t lie- I went rogue. We don’t like Swiss so I used Gouda. I used butternut squash instead of sweet potato (roasted in olive oil, salt, pepper, and a few grub grinds of garden garlic then mashed, amazing). We stole the Mayo idea and spread that on the bread. Sprinkle on those toasted pecans and holy cow, so good. Yes, not the recipe here but I think food is meant to be experimental! I think if you have/like these ingredients you will definitely like this recipe as is.

Malcolm

Try smearing mayo on the outside of the bread instead of butter. It's surprising how great this works.

You'll likely have more than you need, but Carol is on the right track: "Crushing reduces the volume so recipes usually give a generous measure to allow for different sizes and packing of the nuts in the cup". You could probably get away with 1 or 1 1/2 cups of pecans, but you can use the leftovers in other dishes. To top your morning oatmeal perhaps?

This is even better with bacon!

I used this recipe as inspiration and made this as a quesadilla instead of a grilled cheese. Our sweet potato casserole has apples and pecans in it (no marshmallows) so I spread that on the bottom and used cheddar cheese on top of that which is what we had in the house. I made a dip for the quesadilla by combining homemade cranberry sauce with some yogurt and hot honey. Absolutely delicious and a great way to use up leftover sweet potatoes or sweet potato casserole.

Kathleen

Why white bread (ick)?

Nancy

If you don't want to make the French fried onions, you could substitute jarred fried shallots from an Asian market. I like to keep them on hand to add to salads and egg sandwiches. Freshly made is always better, but if time is short they are very good.

Made this today for breakfast and it was great. I did not have pecans but this was still seriously good. I wasn’t sure about the chili powder but sprinkled some on but really couldn’t tell in the final product. I loved the onions and wish I had added a bit more of them. Thanks for the great recipe.

Are you sure that you've had bacon?

Paul Petro

Great delicious way to use leftover sweet potatoes! The chili powder would not have occurred to me but added a great taste. Echo Ken's comment---2 cups of pecans must be a typo?

Jesse

Fried white bread instead of toasted whole grain bread. 2 slices of cheese. Loads of butter instead of olive oil.
Not the healthiest use of leftovers. Thank goodness for the nuts!

Elizabeth Miller

If you make the recipe as written without lots of butter and extra cheese it will be healthier.

Kay C

include a link to the "French fried onions from green bean casserole"

If each sandwich requires a tablespoon of crushed pecans, why does the recipe call for two cups?

chirper

Excellent question! I wonder what the answer will be.

Bri

Same reason one sandwich is two slices of bread but the recipe calls for 8 slices. They are having you make 4 servings, "YIELD 4 sandwiches".

We should all join together and demands answers! Two cups of pecans do not add up to four sandwiches!

FAQs

Should you use mayo or butter for grilled cheese? ›

Butter goes in the pan not on the bread. To ensure golden (not burned) toastiness, the exterior of the sandwich should be slicked with mayonnaise, which has a higher smoke point and possesses the combined browning power of oil and egg yolks.

What type of cheese is best for grilled cheese? ›

Cheese options – For the best grilled cheese, you want to use a combination of mozzarella (for its cheese pull and non-greasy melting qualities) with a flavoured cheese – because mozzarella actually has a very mild flavour. A good vintage cheddar or gruyere are my absolute favourites.

What is good to add to a grilled cheese sandwich? ›

Tuck in a little sautéed spinach, caramelized onions, chopped steamed broccoli, roasted red peppers, or roasted tomatoes. Add fruit. For really gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, use a mix of Gruyere and brie cheese along with thinly sliced apples or a slather of fig jam.

What's the difference between cheese toast and grilled cheese? ›

Grilled cheese is usually made in a non-stick frying pan or a regular pan while toasted cheese is made in a oven. This is because, in a grilled cheese sandwich, the cheese is sandwiched between two slices of bread. This means that the cheese can never come into contact with the pan and so it never sticks.

Are you supposed to butter both sides of bread for grilled cheese? ›

Place bread butter-side down in the hot skillet; add 1 slice of cheese. Butter a second slice of bread on one side and place butter-side up on top of cheese. Cook until lightly browned on one side; flip over and continue cooking until cheese is melted.

What is the most common condiment for grilled cheese? ›

Mustard is the bold condiment you need to make your grilled cheese pop and a must-have for Ina Garten's grilled cheese. To make her recipe, she whips up a spread with Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, and parmesan and adds it to the sandwich.

What 2 cheeses go well together for grilled cheese? ›

Sharp cheddar, Gouda, Fontina, Monterey Jack, Gruyere, Pepper Jack, and brie are all good options. The amount of cheese you use will depend on the size of your bread. I love sharp Cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Gouda together.

Which bread is best for grilled cheese? ›

I recommend a hearty bread that holds up well to being buttered and grilled. I suggest a hearty brioche, sourdough, homemade white sandwich bread, homemade honey wheat bread, etc. Salted Butter.

How many slices of cheese do you need for grilled cheese? ›

For each grilled cheese, you'll need two slices of bread, at least 1 tablespoon of butter, and 2-4 slices of cheese (depending how gooey you like it). American, Cheddar, Swiss, muenster or Gouda all work well—feel free to mix and match your cheeses.

How to spice up a grilled cheese? ›

Out-of-the-box kitchen staples like peanut butter can easily elevate your grilled cheese sandwiches. Avocado, tomatoes, pickles, and bacon also make delicious additions.

What cheese does Starbucks use in grilled cheese? ›

What's included. A delicious blend of white Cheddar and mozzarella cheeses on sourdough bread, topped with a Parmesan butter spread.

Do you grill a grilled cheese sandwich on high or low heat? ›

A skillet preheated to medium or medium-low is optimal (adjust yours accordingly). Start by placing one slice of buttered bread face down in the pan, top with shredded cheese. Add the second slice buttered side up. Cook 2-4 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.

Should I toast my bread before making grilled cheese? ›

For the best results, toast your bread first. A quick toast will help your bread develop the golden edges and luscious crisp that you're after. It'll also help prevent the bread from getting soggy, no matter how many fillings you add.

How to get the cheese to melt on the inside of a grilled cheese? ›

I add one piece of bread to the pan, wait until it's hot, flip it warm side up, and set the cheese on it (that helps it melt a little faster). Then I add the top piece of bread, and cook the outsides as usual.
