Our group of athletic administrators are dedicated to sport, student-athletes, and teams. Athletics administrators are public-facing representatives of the school and interscholastic athletic activities.

Job Summary:

The Head Athletic Trainer will report to the Director of Athletics. The Head Athletic Trainer will supervise and evaluate all aspects of the athletic training program, including training and supervising assistant athletic trainers. The Head Athletic Trainer directs the athletic training staff, oversees the training room, and coordinates medical coverage for athletic events. Determines, with advice from doctors (when appropriate), when and at what level an athlete can return to participation in a sport. Directs departmental operations, including developing and implementing department policies, processes, and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

    • Administrative Leadership:
    • Communicate with parents, as needed, about updated NYS/NATA protocols.
    • Maintain communication with parents on the care and treatment of the student-athletes.
    • Maintain the athletic training budget, including equipment inventory.
    • Manage and supervise direct reports from assistant athletic trainers.
    • Advise coaches on proper conditioning, strength, and flexibility programs.
    • Assists in maintaining all rosters within Veracross—liaison with the PE department to ensure that student-athletes are exempt from PE for the appropriate seasons.
    • Football Game Management ATC to attend all football games (home or away).
    • Coordinate ambulance and team doctor for home football games.
    • Coach Evaluation: Work with the Director of Coaching to provide feedback/evaluate coachesAdministrator on Duty (rotation). The last athletic administrator on campus

Professional Growth and Collaboration:

    • Coordinate coaching staff and Assistant Athletic Trainers certification (including CPR/AED and Concussion Management).
    • Implement staff protocols for professional development opportunities, including NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) and similar programming.
    • Work with the Concussion Legacy Foundation to keep students safe through updated policies and protocols. Assist in the “Make Football Safer” project.
    • Administer SWAY tests to appropriate student-athletes at the start of each school year.

Student Health and Safety:

    • Maintain all student-athlete injury records within the Veracross Database.
    • Ensuring that all coaches adhere to the proper protocols for all injured students.
    • Communicating with Deans and the Learning Research Team regarding students’ academic accommodations post-concussion.
    • Oversee distribution and fitting of sports pieces of equipment.
    • Collect and verify all start-of-season documentation (Sports Physicals, Interval Health Forms, Medical Clearance, etc.)Administer concussion baseline tests to appropriate student-athletes at the start of each school year.
    • Maintain a daily treatment log.
    • Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks.
    • Hold office hours throughout the day for students to get treatment for their injuries.
    • Stock medical kits and other supplies for each team and provide AEDs for each team.
    • Complete all Ivy/NYSAIS Injury Waivers.
    • Liaison with team doctor regarding standing orders and sport-specific coverage.

Required Qualifications:

    • BS in Athletic Training required from an accredited CAATE institution
    • Current NATA/BOC certification
    • Licensed Athletic Trainer with NYSED Office of Professions
    • Certification in Emergency Cardiac Care, as accepted by BOC

$80,000 - $90,000 a year

Grants and Stipends: All employees are eligible for Frankel Fellow grants, known as “passion grants,” which pay for enrichment activities. More than 120 grants have been made to faculty and staff since the program started in 2014. Stipends are available for coaching, affinity group facilitation, advising clubs with significant out-of-school time, and chaperoning trips (including global trips!).

Sabbatical: Full time teaching faculty are eligible for a sabbatical after 10 years of employment.

Retirement: Employees are eligible to join our Defined Contribution retirement plan through TIAA. The school contributes 7% of an employee's annual salary to their retirement account.

Vacation: Riverdale Country School has a generous time-off policy for staff in addition to vacations afforded by the school calendar.
