Use the 4 dc cluster stitch when you want to create a project with substance. The cluster stitch has great textures and is great for rugs, blankets, and scarves, or many other projects.

four double crochet cluster (4-dc cl):Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull through st (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), [yo, insert hook into same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times (5 loops on hook), yo, pull through all remaining loops.

The 4 DC Cluster Stitch is worked over an odd number of stitches. For the video and chart in this tutorial I started with a base of 23 single crochet. The stitch pattern begins with row 2. I’ve also included a finishing row to end your swatch with a row of single crochet. The first and last rows of single crochet are simply to neaten up the top and bottom of your swatch if you want to keep it for future reference. I like to staple mine to an index card with the name of the pattern on it.
Row 1 (WS): FSC an odd number of sts.
-or-
Ch an even number of sts, turn, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across.
Row 2 (RS): Turn, ch 1, sc in each of first 2 sts, [ch 1, skip 1, sc in next st] until 1 st remains, sc in last st.

Rnd 3: Turn, dch2 in first st, ch 1 [4-dc cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] across, dc in last st.

Rnd 4: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, sc in ch-1 sp [ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp] across, sc in last st.

Repeat Rows 3-4 to desired size.
PinFinishing Row: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st and in each sc and ch-1 sp across.
