As you know by now, I grew up on a farm where we had all kinds of fruit and nut trees, as well as three separate gardens. Growing up with a mother who was a high school home economics teacher meant we always had the most wonderful good old-fashioned home-cooked meals. That’s probably why one of my all-time favorites desserts is Grandma’s Favorite Apple Pie recipe.

To this day, my parents have apple trees growing on their farm. Years ago we decided that our favorite apples areRed Prince Apples. These apples have a unique flavor combination that is both sweet and juicy and crisp and tangy.

Red Prince applesare delicious when eaten fresh, used in salads, baked, cooked, sauteed, and for much more. These apples have a nutrient-rich, deep, red color which indicates that they are high in antioxidants. Red Prince apples are basically go-to apples that are good for nearly everything!

Ingredients

  • 1 prepared, unbaked 9-inch pie crust: top and bottom crust (GF Option: use gluten-free pie crust)
  • 5 - 7 apples
  • 3/4 cup sugar (or to taste)
  • 3 tablespoons instant tapioca OR 2 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons apple pie spice
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Prepare homemade pie crust or use store purchased pie crust (top and bottom crust needed)
  2. In a large mixing bowl, pare and cut apples into thin slices.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl combine sugar, instant tapioca, salt and apple pie spice; mix together well. Sprinkle over apple slices; stir.
  4. Pour apples into a 9-inch pie crust; cover with top crust and trim and shape edges. With a knife, make 4 - 5 slits in the top crust for ventilation. Brush with butter.
  5. Bake in a preheated 350 degree F oven for approx. 1 hour.
  6. Serve warm with a scoop of cinnamon or vanilla ice cream or dollop of freshly whipped cream.

Notes

For more tartness use Granny Smith apples or add 1 tablespoon lemon juice to your sliced apples. My mother likes to pre-cook her apples with a little water on the stove-top. She drains off any excess liquid before adding the sugar and other ingredients. To make your own apple pie spice combine: 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon +1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg +1/8 teaspoon ground allspice +pinch of ground cloves
